Looks like Red is riding a Schwinn “Apple Krate” 5-speed. They were made in 1968-1973. I had a “Cotton Picker” until it was stolen by a neighborhood thug. These “Krate” bikes have a very interesting history. Some original ones with all the options are worth thousands of dollars to collectors.
I definitely remember those bikes. I had a friend who had one – coolest thing on the road. I did not, I started out with 2 different bikes from Goodwill and then a Sears, all of which I ended up destroying with broken pedals and frames from going off of too aggressive jumps. That Schwinn though – looked good and was plenty tough.
I never saw kids with cards but we liked to attach a bent empty beer can at the frame so it would be scratched by the tire. Sounded like a motorcycle to us, but our parents would scold us for ruining the tires.

I bet that motorcyclist grinned all the way home for giving Red that boost.

It’s nice when someone else will join along in (and encourage) your imagination.

That’s a Schwinn baby! Had exact same bike in 1969. Wooden clothes pin, PRICELESS!

Wonder which card is being worn away? Playing or sports.

I used to tied popsicle sticks my bike. It drove the neighbors nut with the sounds.

We used the clothes pins to tie cardstock to the frame so that it was flapped by the spokes. We called them putt-putts.

I learned, “Don’t use a card from your mom’s good pinochle deck.”

I’m surprised he could hear over that rumble of his. And Red’s smile in the last frame – priceless;)

Always make sure the card that you use was a scrub player and worthless.

I had a green one with “Ram’s Horn” handlebars and I had it converted to a 10 speed. Good times
