Apparently, American bishops enjoy losing their flock because if they decide to withhold communion from politicians who publicly support legal abortion such as Biden, then more will leave the Church. Add this to a long list of grievous sins committed by these prelates, which I won’t enumerate here. If the Church wishes to meddle in political matters, they should forfeit their tax-exempt status. That will wake up a few parisioners.
Can one be a good Catholic without being a RepubliKKKlan? Has the Catholic Church become a political organization? When will the government require the Catholic Church and Political Action Committee to start paying taxes.
“Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s. Render unto God the things that are God’s.”
This is Theology 101. What part of separation of Church and State do these bishops not get?
The US Bishops have utterly abandoned the faith. They have picked an unbiblical issue and disobeyed the pope in the process. Instead, they have aligned themselves with the immoral religious right of the radical evangelicals — and all for political power. There is not a single thing in their actions that embodies or advances the gospel.
As one who was raised Catholic, I maintain that The Church is very skilled at telling people that they’re not good enough. I’ve come to believe that it’s a common theme in organized religion.
The real Catholic church in the US is at the parish level, and no one pays any attention to the hierarchy. We lay people are too busy with our social justice outreach programs like having food drives and working at the food shelf, serving homeless meals, collections for the Native American reservation up north, our local prison ministry, supporting local charities, calling and visiting the sick and homebound, blood drives, etc, etc. Our Knights of Columbus “Leave No Neighbor Behind”. We are family/community. Probably most of us are “Cafeteria Catholics”, doing the good stuff, ignoring the BS.
Just as a reminder, tax-exempt status for religious property is a TRADITION in the U.S of A. Is is NOT guaranteed under the First Amendment nor in the main body of the Constitution. As a tradition, it can be changed at any time.
The blunder here is that allowing abortion to be legal is no different than allowing divorce, contraception, and manustupration to be legal. Denying Communion is only for personally committing such “sins” of sex. Making excuses for those who do, such as certain Supreme Court justice who has divorced and remarried, just makes it hypocrisy.
In the Catholic Church teaching the Eucharist is the body and blood of Jesus Christ. In order to receive it worthily one must be free of “mortal” sin. To remove sin one needs to go to confession!

Leave it to American Bishops to weaponize the sacraments.

I don’t get it. I thought it was impolite to change the guest list if you’re not the Host?
