Oh wow! The first thing I thought when I read the punchline was ‘A Chorus Line’ and here are Lynn’s comments: “There’s a song in “A Chorus Line” where one of the dancers talks about a teacher who was cruel and menacing, and when he died, she felt nothing. This line just seared into my brain because it is so profound. How can a person you have loved to distraction become someone for whom you feel nothing? It’s hard to imagine when you are in the throes of romance that you might, one day, feel nothing at all."

My HS “girlfriend”, whom I was bonkers for (first love), was actually pretty mean and disrespectful to me. She was a “user”. I didn’t recognize this until I looked back over my life. I’ve since been satisfied with my version of karma when comparing the way my life and family has turned out, compared to what happened to her.
There are comments here about his hesitation and making people behind him wait. Thoughts are very fast. What takes us a few seconds to read would take a person about 1/2 second to think.
Of all the characters and all the story arcs in the years of this comic, the Michael/Martha relationship is the one that means the most to me. Most hard-hitting, most memorable, most poignant. “The first cut is the deepest,” as Cat Stevens sang. But eventually you do feel nothing.

you must feel hungry for a burger, Michael, rather than Martha’s unrequited feelings

“The thrill is gone. It’s gone away for good.
All the thrill is gone. Baby, it’s gone away for good.
Someday I know I’ll be open-armed baby.
Just like I know, I know I should.
You know, I’m free, free now, baby. I’m free from your spell.
Oh, free, free, free now, baby. I’m free from your spell.
And now that it’s all over, all that I can do is wish you well"

“Jason dumped me, so now I’ll take you back..” Nope. Don’t be the “silver medal” of 2nd place. Tell her to go pound sand.

Of course you don’t, Mike. She dumped you right before the biggest test you’d (thus far) taken in your life.
