Not to step on the joke, but where are these people living that they need country codes?

The last I looked, all Canada, the U.S., and Mexico were covered under the North American Numbering Plan originally set up by the Bell System decades ago.

But then that was when area codes all had a 0 or 1 for the middle digit, before the explosion of cell phones caused them to start running out of numbers.

When I lived in Michigan you didn’t have to dial the area code for a local call but here in London Ontario we do.

Hey Macush… in Michigan you still don’t have to dial the area code in some cities… but you do in Detroit… even if you’re calling your neighbor!!

Around here, you only have to put in the last 7 digits, unless you are calling outside of your area code. Cell phones, it depends on what area code the tower is in, that is picking up the outgoing call.

I’ve got to do the “dial one plus area code” thing if I’m calling myself. What I have to pay for having the same number and area code as I used to have, but living in an entirely different place.

for those that do not know America’s country code is 1. So when you are making a long distance call you start with the country code, the area code, and then the 7 digit number (1-444-555-7777)
