Was the CD player anything like the portable record players which were smaller than a record? (CDs spin much faster and have lasers so probably not a good idea)

In theory, I can’t see a problem (and I was an engineer). Look at any CD player and you’ll see that the casing and read-head only extends from the case onto the centre. The rest of the CD is exposed… The entire drive is enveloped so as to protect the innards, but playable on a clear, flat, level surface (but not in the pocket (or pokket), obviously)…

Back in the 60s we had vinyl players like that…

That started the mini / micro CD arms race.

Design a clothing line with bigger pockets.

Only problem was the pocket part. Slide it on the edge of the cd like a tie-clip. Rotary saw blade sold separately.

Engineering gets assigned to make pie-in-the-sky ideas into reality… and gets all the blame when those ideas are impractical…

The patent goes to the originator of the idea, not who built it or even if it was built. Nothing wrong with a good idea.
