When my brother and I were kids my dad took us to Baskin Robbins for ice cream and while my brother and I were checking out which of the 31 flavors we wanted my dad would boringly order vanilla for himself.
I get that sometimes an artist reruns a strip, but in this case it was redrawn from an earlier cartoon with a different ice cream guy as well as a different number of flavors. Only the caption is the same.
Britons in the 60s were amazed by the plethora of American ice cream flavors. At that time, in England, you could get vanilla, chocolate and sometimes strawberry at the local ice cream shops.

If he had vanilla, it’d be “138 flavors”!

It’s still the biggest seller, tho I’m not fond of it being a chocoholic.

Vanilla is the best ice cream to put things on or add things to like: Chocolate Syrup, Hot Fudge, Strawberries, Cherries, Bananas, …
Vanilla also goes best in a root beer float, on hot apple pie or apple crisp, on chocolate cake, with cookies, in a cone …
It is great all by itself. If you like it soft, like I do, zap it in the microwave for 10 or 20 seconds

But, really, vanilla is a flavor, just like any other. A good flavor, too. And as has been noted, you’d not use anything but vanilla a la mode.
