In one of Jonathan Swift’s books, the defense lawyers suffered the same fate as their clients if found guilty. Needless to say, they were quite careful about who they chose to defend.
We protect the rights of the guilty, in order to ensure the rights of the innocent. The purpose of Due Process is to make sure that someone is actually guilty (and that the punishment will fit the crime), not just that we think they’re guilty, or want them to be guilty. If the ‘guilty’ can be railroaded, what’s to keep the innocent from joining them?

It’s how the justice system works in The US. EVERYONE is entitled to a defense. Of course it doesn’t mean you get the best one if you’re not rich.
