The average cat sleeps about 16 hours a day, never all at once. They are naturally diurnal creatures, which means they hunt prey that is active during the twilight periods of the day. It’s one reason they adapt well to indoor life because they sleep when their owners are away.
I have had a number of non-average cats who would stay awake during the day on weekends to hang out with me. I’m sure they made up the lost sleep during the week.
