The morning after I got home from my last trip, I had some raisin bran before I began unpacking. That’s the closest to “serial” killing I have ever come.
When I return from a trip, I stop off at the laundry room of my building before going to my apartment. Everything washable from inside my suitcase goes in a washing machine, plus all the clothing I am wearing that I can remove and still maintain a proper degree of modesty.
The rest of the stuff in my suitcase can be there for months or until my next trip.
The most ridiculous is the “souvenirs” that I still occasionally buy even though I know I won’t want them once I’m home. Sometimes I buy things just to support local artisans. Last trips (a long time ago, “thanks” to COVID), I bought a beautiful plate hand carved out of a natural gradient blue stone, but I can’t remember the name of the stone. It’s still wrapped up in my suitcase, along with whatever else I bought (and forgot about) on that trip. And a gorgeous, intricately hand woven silk shawl, still in my suitcase, that I paid a fortune for.
I’ve always unpacked the day I get home unless it’s really late at night. Usually get the wash started too. Of course, I pack light as we on go to warm sunny places with no need of formal wear. Or on cruise ships, in the “Before times” (helps we live an hours drive to a major cruise ship port).
It takes me longer to unpack and put away the meds I have to carry – I’m up to a separate bag for those that never leaves my sight. Be easier if I didn’t have to carry every prescription bottle but TSA gets funny about cases of pills. It usually takes me an hour when I get to my destination to refill all my med containers so I don’t have to worry about that while on vacation – which is why I prefer trips where we drive to flying anywhere.
Packing is just the same – the only time consuming issue for me is charging up and updating my laptop or tablet, as I only use them for trips. Updating windows alone can take a day on my laptop. Thankfully the tablet is Android.
I prefer to unpack right away. Mainly because the one place I travel most often is my mom’s. I wash my clothes there and then don’t have to do laundry when I get home.

We’d unload the dirty clothes to the hamper and unpack the meds, but that was all we’d do right away. Too tired.

Correction: Serial killers put their suitcase in a freezer until they figure out what to do with the “laundry”…

I have to unpack, just to stretch out the muscles from being cramped in the airplane or car.

Well, if you don’t unpack immediately, you will Never get all dried Blood out of the suitcases.
