My GF was so productive that her boss used to cut her progress reports in half because he didn’t think upper management would believe he had an employee doing the work of three people.
Was a middle management person for a (short) while. Hated doing evaluations, had to do 2 or 3 a week to keep up. Upper management seemed to want me to grade on the curve. Told them we didn’t keep employees around unless they were doing a good job.
I once offered to cover a colleague’s caseload for a week, in addition to my own, while he was on vacation. When the week was over, my boss told me "since you are able to cover a second caseload, we are doubling your caseload on a permanent basis. No good deed goes unpunished. This is how the stereotypical civil servant is born.
When a company I worked for went from cost of living raises to performance based raises, the nimrods that thought this was a ticket to wealth soon found out busting your rear to get a raise only moved the bar higher each year until they burned out and found new careers.

When the bar is set too high, you need a taller bar stool.

I was fortunate in my job. My employer measured “above and beyond” or “exceeded expectations” against average performance, not just mine.

Do a little more each day and soon they expect more.
