When I was a kid (decades ago) popcorn balls and apples (especially caramel ones) were highly favored treats. Word got around who was giving such swag out, and everyone made their way over there. Course, back then the treats were homemade, not commercial dreck.
The family that owned an amusement park in the Cleveland area that closed about 40 years ago, still makes markets their popcorn balls in the local stores. I think they’re less than 50 cents and they’re pretty good.
Vawser: I think apples went out when creeps started hiding razor blades in them.
For awhile, hospitals were offering to X-ray Halloween loot to look for stuff concealed in the apples and candy bars.
Does anyone else remember this, or am I just making it up?
Ray C. I remember. After that came the advice to never receive homemade treats only those in wrappers and also have an adult look through your goodies before consuming.
Ray, the razor blades in the apples were more Urban Legend than reality. I don’t think many (if any) documented cases of that actually happening exist .
Still, enough people heard stories about “some kid in Oklahoma who DIED” or “this crazy old man on the other side of town” that some hospitals did indeed offer x-ray service to frightened parents.
Also: While caramel apples were highly prized, if somebody is handing out plain old APPLES like you can get EVERY DAY and are actually GOOD FOR YOU, they deserve to get their windows egged.
