Not only do they have jobs (and standards), but if they robbed you right after or during a move, they’d be the prime suspects. Especially if they did it to more than one customer.
Quite recently I bought a new larger house and had all of our stuff moved – it went surprisingly smoothly, so far we haven’t found anything broken and it is just a matter of not being able to find the occasional missing thing that didn’t get packed where we thought. Pretty normal. I have a good friend who is taking a bit of a sabbatical who is moving in with us while he gets sorted back out, and he ALSO used (different) movers to get his stuff to the house. His movers were terrible. Crushed boxes, wouldn’t put back together what they had taken apart, needing different trips to get stuff delivered to the last mile without telling us when they would show up. That sort of thing. We found his stand mixer in a box marked “bedroom”. So, while it may be a commodity – the quality is not uniform.

Once you reach a certain age you need to hire movers, all your friends are going to be too old and unwilling to do it for a 12 pack of beer and pizza!

The ultimate moving in present is a large bottle of wine, a bottle of naproxen, and a roll of trash bags.
