Hopefully TV viewers will have a lot more discretion after the invasive glut of “reality” show “celebrities” into every corner of life over the past decade or so.
Discretion? Perhaps. Discernment? Not so much. When “Dancing With The Has-Beens” – excuse me, I meant “Dancing with the Wannabes” – pardon me, I meant “Dancing With The _Stars_” is the top-rated program, I’d say discernment has gone the way of the Carolina Carrier Pigeon, the Dodo bird, and “common sense”; e.g., down the chute.
Gawd, I haven’t had the tv on for at least 10 years, maybe closer to 15. . .the only time that obnoxious piece of technology is in my face is at a doctor’s office. . .and there should be no tvs in doctors’ offices: they just raise your blood presssure.
There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur, or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: There is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to… The Outer Limits.
No, they do not. All of the channels are turning into the same garbage, unfortunately. Mindless reality shows, the same syndicated shows and mostly bad movies. Even the science channels, now. I get it, it is nice to turn your mind off once in a while — but nearly everysingle channel? That really says something, no?
They’ve got bills to pay so they go with what gets the ratings. And now it is getting worse with exclusive streaming channels of broadcast networks — the programming that is, interesting or needs a bigger budget, is now where they land.

I think they want you should turn the volume down.

Usual smug comment about how long it has been since I owned a TV.

Is having discretion the same as being discreet? (I love English!)

No, not for at least fifty years.

For some TV shows, “Viewer REGRESSION is advised”.

Looks as though he had enough discretion to go get the cup of coffee in P2…

Doubt it…..

He actually raises a valid point. If viewers had better discretion, half of what’s on entertainment TV would never have survived.
