If I ever taught an English lit class, I would give my students the option of listening to the original radio dramas of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy instead of reading the book, since that was its original incarnation.
That’s better than not having any interest in story telling. Before the advent of near universal literacy people listened to hourlong stories, it seems we are getting back to this time.
We need to give room to the notion that written words may not be as essential for communication as they were in past generations. I used to be an avid reader, and I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. At my peak I could consume a novel in a single day. Now I’m much busier than I was in my youth, but thanks to audiobooks and podcasts I can consume information at the nearly same rate while working on many other tasks – a net increase overall.

Yikes! I read 1200 wpm and cannot bear to hear books read to me. I will, however, gladly listen to radio performances.
