The whole reason I built furniture for my place was because I couldn’t find affordable pieces to fit in places where needed so such a situation is just really weird to me.
Even with modern technological assistance, it’s easy to screw things up. Before a move, I used AutoCAD to plot out the dimensions of rooms in the new house and moved little furniture objects around to make a map for the movers. Unfortunately, I had measured the upper floor dimensions without realizing the lower floor had a six-foot setback as part of a garden behind the house. The movers left furniture as I had instructed but it didn’t all fit on the lower floor. I wound up carrying furniture upstairs myself.
All you very clever do-it-yourselfers, with your great ideas on how this should have been done, and how to make it right, are missing the obvious solution: This is a cartoon. Redraw the room so the furniture fits.

Why don’t you put it against the wall next to the lamp?

Put the chair against the corner of the wall, the lamp next to it, then you’ll be able to put the bookcase against the wall. It will fit.

It needs to be full of books, too
If I could build one, it would have to be bigger
The three I have are full, and I’m going to have to rearrange a room to add another

Turn the hat around. It kills brain cells like that.

Reminds me of Bob Newhart’s DIY bookcase.

We have gaps between some bookshelves, so we can access power outlets. The gaps collect dog hair and the robovac can’t go there.

Turn it sideways.

The question is: is it attached to the wall?

Not as bad as Joey’s entertainment center, on “Friends.”

You’d be surprised at how many people have no clue what a measuring tape is for.

So, measure 5 or 6 times and move once. :)

Move everything around the room by three inches. That should do it.
