I work in retail. There are LOTS of people who need help in the self-checks.

Some barcodes simply can not be read by the scanner!

I always go to the line with a real person doing the checking. I want to make sure to do my part to give someone a job.

The only person I’ve ever seen have trouble with a self checkout was, in fact, a checkout operator themselves a few years ago. I do not understand this situation.

I refuse to use them! I don’t work for the store. I’d use them for a generous discount only.

I went to use a self check out once. Never again. First item i go to scan. Can’t find a bar code anywhere in order to scan the item. The helper has to come over and enter the price which I don;t know and see no list to get the number to enter. I set the basket of tomatoes down in the bagging error. System starts beeping at me because it sense too much weight in the bagging area, helper returns. clears error. Next item the scanner reads twice. Have to get the helper to take out the extra item. Next item has a discount coupon attached directly beside the bar code. Scanner reads the discount coupon first then won’t let me scan in the item because it;s already discounted. Get the helper yet again. In total it took me 10 minutes longer to get and pay for my order then it would have taken me to wait in a line for a cashier. I only used the self check out because I was in a hurry trying to catch a bus so I could get across town to go to work at the store where I work as a cashier. How this is more convenient for customers and why people like these machines is an utter mystery to me.

I use self checkouts all the time. The machines usually need more help than I do.

I refuse to use self-checkouts. I have never seen one that didn’t require a full-time human attendant, who’s expected to work twice as hard as they would as a regular cashier, plus having to put up with angry and frustrated shoppers.

The manager at Walmart told me the reason for no cashiers is they couldn’t get anybody to come to work for that position. That’s what we (but not me) get for treating them so rotten.

Walmart is getting good at charging more than the posted price.

When I lived in an area that had self checkout I would get upset that we still had to pay the same for the groceries and not get at least an employee’s discount. I always paid myself with steaks.

I’m OK with self-checkout at CVS, because I never buy more than a couple items at a time there. A full grocery run is more troublesome.

Anyone else think the term sounds like it calls for a mirror?

I try to make small talk with the machines. I have a favorite. She is so pleasant. Turn-on; “unexpected item in the bagging area”.

So, apparently, they fire the register check out clerk and expect you to scan and bag your own stuff for free?
