Our company is very short staffed. People complain about how much work they have to do. Yet they stay.

There is this myth of the 40-hour work week and two, count them TWO weeks; paid vacation and all of SIX of 13 holidays recognized. America: land of the wage slave.

It’s a miracle that Europe isn’t a conglomeration of third world countries what with all the time off they give their workers – even MONTHS of paid maternity leave. There is NO way these countries can have profitable businesses. How can their CEOs get (you will note I did not use the word “earn”) big bonuses with programs like that?

I am glad that this cartoon does not apply to me.

I am a data analyst and a darned good one. I’m the only one in my company that can do what I do. Mostly, I automate tasks for other people. I chose to be hourly so I could take unpaid time off. There may be a week or two in a year where I might put in 50 hours because the work is there to do. Once I have these task automated, they take minutes instead of hours or even days.

Once I automate these tasks, I’m out of a job – until the next task to be automated comes along. If there isn’t work to do, I don’t punch the clock. However, the company usually manages to keep me busy with meetings and other small jobs.

The company also knows that I don’t need the salary and can retire at any time. So, they put up with my weird work hours. I usually work Mon-Thu from 7 AM to 8:30 PM with breaks for lunch, swimming in the pool, dinner and whenever I feel like it. I usually log 36 hours a week. I tell my employer that I am giving them a 10% discount on my work. :)

I like the work I do and my employer likes the work that I do.

Not everyone is in a position to call the shots on their working conditions. Although it is a huge step down from the managerial positions I’ve held in the past, it is a great way to end my working career which began in 1964 selling cotton candy at an amusement park.

The day I retired was one of the happiest days of my life; too bad my body’s too shot to enjoy it to its fullest, due to the 40 years I spent wearing myself out on those back-breaking jobs. I cringe now when I look back.

" Hello Aunty, what’s happening? I’m gonna need you to go ahead and come in tomorrow. So if you could be here at around….9, that’d be great."

“Yeah……..I’m gonna need you to come in on Saturday. Oh, oh, and I almost forgot. Ahh, I’m also gonna need you to go ahead and come in on Sunday, too.”

As long as you get things done, you’re not short staffed, think about it.

Then you say “take this job and shove it.”

Now you can smoke all the time and drink all the coffee, and other things (gin, bourbon, scotch, etc) at your desk…

What a great motivator.

I watched the store die for years as the boss funneled money that should have restocked shelves instead enrich the local tribe, who were poor even before the white man. The second California legalized slots on reservations they signed naming rights with Trump to finance the machines. The second the machines paid for themselves his name came off the casino.

Well since they will be expecting the available workers do the work of those they used to pay… they should divide the money they paid those other people among the existing workers!

That’s the very definition of capitalism.

I once worked in an office where one of the women died at her desk. The woman who had gone over to ask her a question was totally freaked out.

It turned out that only the two people in HR who had been approving her Medical Bills knew that she had terminal Cancer. She didn’t tell any of her co-workers just how sick she was.

The note from her manager did not say that. That was her interpretation (and I have no doubt it was completely accurate). But most businesses and the people in them do not speak so plainly.
