I used to work in retail and we had customers who were always waiting. I have to say that there have been times that I have also waited because I needed something that at the time was important and the store wasn’t open yet.
During normal situations, and perhaps even in the pandemic, if you get to a retail establishment 5 minutes before they open, makes more sense to wait than to go some place else and come back. Waste of fuel, travel time doubles, etc.

During the worst of the pandemic shutdown our store opened an hour later than usual for a while
It was also during the worst of the shortages
We had crowds at the door waiting to get in, usually there’s no more than 1 or 2

Those people are pretty calm for waiting to get into the store. Usually they’re knocking at the door, demanding to be let in!
