My mother was an artist and made me extremely elaborate costumes that were difficult to move around in. The witch doctor one probably wouldn’t pass PC muster today, either (think the Mono Tiki Tia episode of Scooby Doo).
Instantly brought back the very fond memories of my mom pronouncing, more than once, You must have had fun if you got that dirty! We lived near a creek.
I just watched a video this morning where experts of various fashion periods reviewed cheap “historical” costumes. One of the points was that “fast fashion” where you buy something for one use is wasteful, and not even that good, anyway… one might as well just get creative with things at home to make a costume to get the same effect: a fun, loose representation of an era or historical figure. (“Bernadetter Banner” on youtube) I had a lot of fun putting together costumes during my colleges’ “spirit weeks,” and just with stuff I had in the dorm room, a little craft paper, clothespins, and maybe printing out a nametag =)

I’ve had a few store bought superhero Halloween costumes
The quality of the costumes was not good, and the super powers of the contents was nothing to brag about either

I usually go as a scarecrow. I figure it’s type casting…if I only had a brain.
