I’ve known people who took their rats home with them (provided the experiment didn’t harm them). One friend had a “rescue” rat that was a very good pet. I never used them myself, but when I would see them in some other labs, I noticed they would come up to me and show curiosity. I think most of the techs handling them were pretty gentle.
