Poor Michael. While the rest of family was crying at the sad events of the TV movie, it took Mike a few hours lying in bed and thinking about the movie before he finally realized it was sad. This is kind of like when someone gets a joke several minutes after it has been told and they think about it for awhile.
My older daughter never cries during movies, no matter how sad or emotional. She feels the emotions…just no tears. Easily the saddest, most tear-inducing movie I’ve ever seen (and I’m a classic movie-crier) is “I’m Not Ashamed”, the true story of one of the kids killed at Columbine. We all watched it together. My younger daughter & I were holding each other, sobbing. My husband was wiping his eyes. Our older girl…nothing; but after the movie, she did comment how good the movie was…and how sad. That’s just how she is. (She also didn’t jump at the end of “Carrie”…but that’s another story for another day.)
I went through a stage as a teenager when I thought I wouldn’t be interested in The Wizard of Oz any more, because I thought it was a “kids movie”. Then I saw a lot of people gathered around a TV set in the college dorm activity area enjoying it a lot, and it was then that I realized my attitude made no sense. Stop worrying about labels and enjoy what you like.
I remember watching It’s a Wonderful Life on TV with my family. I heard sniffling and glanced around. My Mom, Dad, and sister were all teary-eyed. I snickered. Two years later, I was joining them with the tissues. The difference? Change from child to young woman.
“I get my own room? And I’m a part of this family now? My dreams have come true!” ….. “Oh, yes dear. We always need more people for our maple syrup production. I’ll be sure to get you up bright and early at four o’clock in the morning!”
A group of us, as young teens went to see “An Imitation Of Life”(1959)-No spoilers, it has one of THE SADDEST endings ever ! I had an upset stomach, which I mentioned as we went to leave. My friend said, “Does it hurt that bad ?”..I said, “I’m not crying because my stomach hurts, I’m crying because of the movie!” And that started our little group laughing, which in turn got us nasty glares from other theater goers.
Little Sarah Jane? Well, when you grow up, little Sarah Jane, you can look forward to some strange adventures with a madman in a box. And after he moves on, he’ll leave you with the best robot dog a woman could have.

That dialog sounds awfully realistic (for a sob-story movie). Does anyone recognize it?

Yeah. I get it. Military discipline and bearing are tough. Especially, if you are not.

My wife watches those things all the time. I usually watch an “adventure” movie on the computer or read a book instead.

The kid just didn’t want to cry in front of his family, especially Elizabeth. And sometimes, it takes a while for the moment to sink in.

For youngsters the emotions sink in slowly but surely.

It’s a defense mechanism with young men. If the feel like they are going to become emotional, they leave so they can do it without witnesses.
