When I was a teen, I take a kite and a fishing pole with as much 6-8lb mono-filament as it’d hold (probably 2-300 yards. Much lighter and stronger than regular kite string) and go out in the front yard and get the kite as high as I could. Then just lay the pole down and let it fly. I could keep one in the air pretty much all day without touching it (winds tend to be steadier a few hundred feet up where-as many people fly kites only 50-100’ up. Also if the wind drops, the kite has more time for the wind to pick back up before it hits the ground.)

Like I said earlier- It’s very windy here.

The straw-man should be very knowledgeable on how things behave when the wind blows.

I was always impressed by those who seemed to be able to get kites a gazillion miles high.

At least they stay away from kite eating trees.
