runar, is margueritem familiar with “Dennis The Menace”?

margueritem, a shortcut explanation: “Dennis The Menace” has been running since 1951–and Dennis is still 5 1/2!

“Mr. Bun seems comatose.” Oh, that’s great!!! I’m sure I read all these strips back in the 80’s, but it’s almost like I’ve never seen them before.

I know that the strip ended before he grew up, but I’m going with ‘what ifs’ here. I can picture Susie being just like Calvin’s Mom. I can’t see Dennis ever marrying Margaret, however.

Mr. Bun has no kid with the level of imagination that Calvin has, and therefore, is a stuffed toy to everyone. I love it how Hobbes even perceives the bunny as being comatose! :) (from one stuff toy to another)

It seems to me that Susie simply has too tight of a hold on reality. Calvin would much rather be playing games that no one has ever actually experienced on this planet. No time for ‘playing house’… blah!

Calvin will undoubtedly marry Susie. It’s her reality that’ll keep him grounded, and his imagination that’ll help her live. Calvin is just firmly routed in the girls are icky phase. They’ll just fight alot more than most, because Calvin will always be immature.

Occasionally, he does play with Susie. One Sunday strip, they were married, but ran into trouble when Calvin became Tarzan. And there was the time he called her a name, then felt bad an apologized.

Calvin will probably refine Cavinball to have set rules, and go on to make it a real sport. With his creativity, and Susie’s perceived common sense turned good business sense, they’ll go quite far. They complete each other. I also think Calvin is aware of liking Susie more than other girls, and is so confused he blames her for it, and lashes out at her for making him like a girl. Yet through it all, Susie always comes back to him. She knows there’s decency in him towards her, and wants to bring it out when they’re together. When Calvin grows up a little, he’ll like all the attention.

Mr. Prongs, your future predictions are completely and utterly rediculous. For starters, “Calvinball having rules?” That goes against everything calvin stands for. Furthermore, your final comments are so preposterous, I laughed out loud when I read them. They complete each other. You said, “I also think Calvin is aware of liking Susie more than other girls, and is so confused he blames her for it, and lashes out at her for making him like a girl. Yet through it all, Susie always comes back to him. She knows there’s decency in him towards her, and wants to bring it out when they’re together.” This is a comic about a six-year-old, not a soap opera! The entire “Calvin marries Susie” thing is possibly debatable, but I personally believe that it wouldn’t happen. Calvin certainly does not “like” Susie.

“Calvin certainly does not “like” Susie.”

I seem to remember one strip where she throws a snowball at him, and he’s all excited because that means she likes him.

    SO HAH. MARRIED.

i love that. He told her to “go play in a microwave, susie. We’re Busy.” i am so using that line. Then hobbes with the “comatose” is just great. this whole thing is greatness.

Ahh…Jrot, you bring up a good point. In the very beginning of the strip, and Watterson himself has commented on this, he made it so that Susie and Calvin DID sort of have a “love” relationship. However, as the strip progressed, Watterson realized that this was not how he wanted their relationship to be, so it changed to more of a “simply annoyed by one another” relationship. At the airing of this particular strip, as well as the majority of the strips, the latter was how their relationship was conveyed. So, I can see how some people, who have only read the early strips, would seem to think that Calvin and Susie are somehow “desperately in love” with one another. And yes, tabylynn, “go play in the microwave” is one of the best insults ever.

I think that calvin and hobbs became a great game development duo and are locked away in a basement someplace writing killer video games and raking in all that money. Susie is just a glimmer in the past.
