Whatever you do, don’t complain to the newspapers, especially if you’ve been drinking… They might twist the truth and accuse you of being a member of ALKY-DA…
Funny and very true, although Charles Schulz made a similar observation years earlier:
Linus and Charlie Brown were leaning against that familiar brick wall, and the first three panels had Linus waxing verbose about problems facing the world today. In the final panel, he says something like, “Then there are people who think that there is too much talk and not enough action in modern comic strips. What do you think of that?” To which Charlie Brown answers, “Ridiculous.”
And of course, “Peanuts” was the smallest strip on the printed page at that time…
Sadly, I read this and I hear some of Watterson’s reasons for ending C&H. He said it himself: “…because there’s no room for better artwork, the comics are simply drawn; because they’re simply drawn, why should they have more room?”
His mind and the strip were both too brilliant to be restrained to such a small space, but nobody listened. Thankfully, we still have over 3,000 C&H strips that many, myself included, will enjoy reading forever.
I’m mixed on this. I remember in the 50’s growing up in the
St. Louis area, the newspaper had two pages of comics that were printed small, there were a lot of comics to read, now that paper has two pages of comics that are printed big but less comics to read. Some of the same comics continue but are done by another artist, sometimes an offspring or relative and while close to what I remember in a simpler time, they have evolved, maybe I should gather up my wine collection and head for the nursing home…
margueritem:
Cal’s mom is looking for a nursing home…and you said your Grandpa’s type… that’s why I asked you to recommend your one. Then you were going to buy one…
Obviously, I was joking.
Anyways, have fun on X’mas
My father had been in different nursing homes three times. He kept complaining about those nursing homes he disliked. I was glad he was gone peacefully.
Please don’t tell my children that I subscribe to tis, read all the comments and een comment myself.
Been reading comics for more than 60 years. Some now are wa-a-a-ay too small.
!smackin’ self in tha forehead,…. margueritem, thank you even tho I ad to read yur explanation 3 times to pick it up. Have gotten so used to typos(sadly diminished expectations), that it kept going right by me.
Texmystic good shot pal!
margueritem, if you do buy that nursing home, save me a space.
Yukoner. if I were ever to buy a nursing home, I’d make it a very pleasant place, and people living there would, to the best of their ability, be happy.

But they’re not Xeroxed. Each panel is slightly different. Each was separately drawn, which is awesome.

Funny poke indeed! Yeah, nice touch the way Watterson imitated 4 photocopies.
.
Just thinking: Did we ever meet Calvin’s grandparents over the years? Can’t remember.
Greypilgrim almost 16 years ago
The four panels are NOT exactly the same. Watterson did four separate drawings…but the joke is STILL funny…LOL!!!

I’m glad some cartoonists still do detailed drawings, such as those in Cul-de-sac, nonsequitur, Lio, and a few others.
