Wolfbyte36 has returned from his camping trip only to find out that Calvin has gone into political campaigning. How about Hobbes for president… Here’s a good slogan, NO TUNA CAN WILL BE LEFT UNOPENED.

wolfbyte36, that reminds me of a 1986 Calgary (I think to Sun, since that’s more a parody of newspaper than the more stodgy Herald) “letter to Editor” suggestion made along these lines:

Morris (9-lives cat) should be PM

Sylvester (always clumsily getting in troublesome situations) as Defence Minister

Official opposition should be No Dogs Party

at tax-time, send can of expired Star-Kist to your feline MP in Ottawa.

BTW FishStix, Calvin forgot one critical factoid: polls are meaningful only in a democracy–they fail miserably in absolute monarchies or dictatorships unless the poll-responder is willing to take some serious action to be the replacement for the poll-subject (of course, the incongruous idea of Calvin appointing himself as his dad doesn’t occur).

My dad would’ve blistered my tailfeathers if I’d said to him what Calvin is saying to his dad.

The new dad? The one who gives into Calvin’s every demand, and always lets him have his own way? I don’t think he’s gonna agree to that.

Careful, Calvin—there’s actually a law that allows parents to “emancipate” their unruly minor children. That means they can dump you and go get a dog.

Great comment, Saucy1121. Can’t believe now how upset I got all those many years ago when they announced the end of what is now called Classic Coke (I did not like the taste of New Coke; apparently a lot of other folks didn’t either). Couldn’t imagine a future without my favorite soft drink. Oh, well. History now, right?

Please forgive double-take on my note to Saucy1121. I used to wonder why occasionally some messages in this space were repeated twice in a row. Now I know after repeatedly being told that my comment was “unable to be saved” or something like that, so I copied text into a new box, only to find that when it got through there were two identical messages.

i remember a black and white comic book of the time, which speculated that the classic coke formula was stolen by the time traveling extra terrestrial thieves and new coke was the solution to the problem. when the x-thieves had to return the formula to restore the fundamental equilibrium of the universe, classic coke made its return and new coke went away. no idea any more who did the book, but i always liked it (when i still collected)

I remember seeing this (with more entries) years ago:

When I was six, my dad knew everything.

When I was eight, my dad knew more than your dad.

When I was fifteen, my dad didn’t know anything

When I was twenty three, my dad sure knew a lot more than I did.

When I was fifty, I talked to my dad as often as possible to find out what he knew.

When I was sixty, I wished I could talk to my dad.

Calvin, I was not sure but I think you try to replace another “daddy” instead of your own biological daddy. I wish I could but I couldn’t do that. Darnit!

My father was not perfect but I really thanked him for supporting and raising my brothers, sisters and myself while he worked for years. Mostly I really missed my mother because she is a best loving mother.

The ETs discovered (much to their dismay) that the coke they made from the formula they stole, is not good for powering their UFOs.

I think that Calvin’s thoughtful approach towards his dad is to be commended. After all he could have called “Child Protective Services”.

I had a cousin who was growing up in the 80s when these comics were new. She played this “game” with her dad occasionally and, even though he found it frustrating sometimes, he also enjoyed her sense of humor and the inventiveness of her polls. Both of them are now gone and reading these poll series always brings back fond memories of both father and daughter.
