I wonder if this is a humorous setup that will take a darker twist and highlight some or other mental illness in Gene. I remember a similar type run in Between Friends by Sandra Bell-Lundy which started innocuously enough before out of nowhere taking a turn into domestic abuse.

It will be decided he bumped his head, then – partly in a daze – he stumbled into the storeroom and had the hallucination because of fumes from the cleaning supplies. Everyone will feel happy things are all explained/tied up neatly. And there will be a final panel of mascot Gene now happily living in mascotopia.

So did he just hallucinate?
