Excellent answers from so many people! Thanks guys and gals. I do the same things. I live alone, so I still have to deal with it! What is throwing me, (No offence, Greg) Is trying to fit it into what Papa Bucket is saying. Small aside; I have a chair OUTSIDE the door to put stuff on while I unlock.
A little off topic here, but it’s related to what some of the commentors have said so I thought I’d tell the story. When my brother Dan was born (4th child of 8) the family was in the process of moving from a small house to a large farm house that my father was building (yes, he was that handy) but the family had to move out of the old house before the new one was ready so they lived in the barn which was completed before the house. For years my mom had to be careful whenever Dan would do something like walk in with muddy shoes or leave the door open when he walked in because if she said something like, “were you raised/born in a barn?” he’d give her a wicked grin and say, “Yes.”

The stuff washed up on an island is flotsam – and is finders keepers by international law. So you’re entirely free to do whatever you want with it.

A crescent wrench, a hammer, a baseball cap, mail…all perfectly reasonable kitchen island items if you don’t put up a sign.

I don’t have an island, but my husband piles all sorts of stuff on any available counter in the kitchen!
