I worked in human services for forty years. It was very rewarding. Unfortunately for years it was hard to make much money. When I was in my twenties that was mostly OK but when I went back to school to get a professional degree I still loved the work and I made a decent salary. The difficulty then was that I had to spend an inordinate amount of time on documentation. The joy outweighed the struggle enough to be very rewarding.
I think one of the issues with the US is that we have lost the concept of “The Common Good.” In our case chasing after wealth has made our nation poor when it comes to the welfare of our people.
