“Did you give Michael money for gas? Because the car is almost out of gas just like I planned, and I thought it would be hilarious if he ran out of gas tonight.”
I did not get to drive around by myself on New Years’ Eve when I was 16 and neither did my kids. It’s not a good night to let your kids go out and do whatever they want. There are too many drunk drivers on the streets. I cannot recommend what Elly and Grandpa Jim are doing.
I remember the NYE when I was 17. I babysat my little brother while my parents went out, but they let my boyfriend stay over (we had a guest room). My mother also bought us a little single-serving bottle of Andre’s Pink Champagne to split to toast in the new year. I made us (all 3 of us, including my little brother) a nice dinner. After my brother went to bed my boyfriend & I watched TV together & watched the ball drop at midnight with champagne.
It was not my Grandfather who gave me money ( He was to tight ) It was my Great Grandmother who gave me $20 said have a good time, She should know She buried 3 Husbands and a live in !
Grandpa Jim is living in the 1940s. It’s a whole different world out there now… there are too many drunks and crazies on the road during “amateur night”. New Year’s Eve, Saint Patrick’s day, Cinco de Mayo… Best not to be on the roads in the evening during those events.
I would be fine with this except for Mike’s expression of smugness while he counts the cash….I know he is essentially a normal teen (in a comic strip) but I am glad he’s not my kid :D
Things were different in Grandpa’s time.. there were not that many cars on the road and they couldn’t drive nearly as fast. Giving Michael the keys to the car on New Years eve.. might not be a wise move.
Pay back time.Today is my birthday and when a kid I never did that when a kid Michael’s age, when I was working still single and going to church joined a singles group and then went for New Years Eve party to end my birthday. Happy Birthday to all New Years eve kids. My loving husband surprised me with a really nice gift, not diamonds not needed, but birthday stone necklace and matching earrings, wish I could share of that gift. Two more months my SS benefits start.

Well, it’s sort of Grandpa’s job to be the yes-er to counter the no-er’s sometimes. He was the hammer enough to know when “no” isn’t going to cut it.
