There’s an urban legend that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle once sent a prank telegram to several of his friends, saying only “All is discovered. Flee at once.”. According to the story, each of them left the country within 24 hours, and one of them was never seen again.
That will sound very convincing in court when you are suspected of tampering with the U.S. Mail. That mailbox is not a handy receptacle for your personal messages. If you want to put something in someone else’s mailbox, buy a stamp and let authorized personnel do the job for you. Seriously, if someone’s check doesn’t arrive on time and you are spotted opening that mailbox, it won’t be pretty.
