Wouldn’t rock bands and stand-up comedians have a bright future as consultants to the gig economy? That’s the way they’ve been doing business all along.
As an underemployed academic whose area is late antiquity I read Non Sequitur to keep me updated in 21st century argot. And, damn!, adjunct work at 17 colleges and universities (so they didn’t have to pay decent wages or provide benefits) means I’ve been part of the gig economy without even having a name for being treated badly.
I’m always amazed at what little tidbits of knowledge I can receive by reading GoComics and the comments they inspire. The bits of knowledge removes the feeling that it’s a total waste of time. ;-)
I hear that Santa’s are in big demand as many Santa’s are unwilling to let children, many too young for vaccination, to sit on their laps. I’d say a Santa with his own reindeer would be a real find.
I started out life doing a variety of jobs from paper routes to mowing grass. I became an actor and later worked as a freelance writer and/or production coordinator in film, television, and advertising. In my late thirties, I went into a series of managerial and trouble-shooting positions in the hospitality industry – the longest was with one corporation for over eight years. In my early fifties, I went to work as a consultant for the cruise and travel industry and freelanced for a large public relations/marketing firm part-time until I completely retired.
My point is that unknowingly, I have always been part of the gig economy. The money was always very good, the benefits – if there were any – were o.k. but there was very little provision for retirement.

Why would an Uber driver be in a bar drinking? Uber might ask me to rate my driver.

The only reason business hasn’t moved 100% to gig style is that there ARE jobs where training and aptitude matter.

The gig economy? Victorian factory owners just called it the economy …

I must be a little off, but I look forward to retiring and getting a gig at McDonalds or Waffle House to stay busy.

One night of working the chimneys has to pay for the workshop time and labor costs. Santa needs a tax break.

Hey, there are only 6 reindeer. Oh, Donner is getting Blitzed, and Rudolph is in the Red Light District.
