    Serves you right, Irv! When I was a kid the allowance was not dependent on our completing our chores though there were hints that it might have been. If we wanted extra money we could do extra chores. Good way to augment the allowance especially when you needed money for a particular toy or to buy gifts at Christmas.

    I got a dollar a week for doing dishes, mowing or shoveling, depending on the season, and whatever else came my way. Of course that was when you could get a burger, fries, and drink for 50 cents.

    Allowance? I was a senior in high school before I even got paid for household chores. I worked two summers in the tobacco fields of North Carolina for my spending money.
