My mother had a yellow 1955 Chevrolet Bel-Aire when I was born. No seat belts. Next car was a white 1963 Ford Country Sedan station wagon. No seat belts. After a minor rear-ender in the wagon where I hit the dashboard and got a huge bump on my head, Mom took the car into the shop and they installed airplane seat belts. We were just about the only car in the neighborhood that had them for the longest time.
My dad built a stool to fit over the hump in the floor of the back seat so I could stand on that and see out the windshield on long drives. I still have the stool and currently use it to boost the dog’s food dish up so she doesn’t have to bend over so far (she’s 14).
One of my first memories was sitting in the backseat of my dad’s 1974 Firebird. No seatbelts that I recall. I was about 2 or 3 years old. He sold it soon after because we were expecting my baby brother to be born and that would have made 6 of us in the family. The car barely fit us 3 kids and my parents, but add a baby and it’s a no-brainer, he had to swap to something more “family friendly”.

We would all drink and drive. “How about one more for the road?” they would say.
