Christmastime 2021 was hard on my brother’s family when planning on going back home to New Jersey: a few canceled, overbooked, or delayed flights. My sister-in-law —being an employed flight attendant— managed one day to get herself a flight whereas my bother as well as 3-yo and 1-yo nephews to finally got themselves a flight home New Year’s Day 2022.
It’s a nice picture, relatives at the gate with their loved ones, waiting for departure, then grabbing a bite to eat because the flight’s been delayed. Then you’ve got greeters at the gates, waiting for people to deplane. And while it’s nice to see grandma and grandpa off, or greet little Susie as she comes home from college, this creates a messy sort of circumstances for people who are actually traveling. Pre-9/11, you would have at least double the amount of people past the security checkpoint who are not actual travelers… Greeters and well-wishers. These are people who are there, in the way, taking up space in the restrooms and shops, taking up seating in restaurants, bars, and at the gates. Actual travelers might have a very short time between connecting flights and may have to eat or go to the restroom, something they may not have been able to do on the airplane… And that is much more difficult to do when at least half of the people in the airport really have no business being there. Frankly, I’m glad that people without a boarding pass are not allowed past the security checkpoints anymore. I travel for work a few times a year at least, and I can’t tell you how nice it is not to have so many non-essential people in the way, clogging up restaurants or tripping over their young kids playing in the corridors as I’m trying to catch a connecting flight..
One hour 10 minutes is not much of a delay. One flight we were on was to leave ODS on March 8 at 09:45 for IST. The flight arrived 8 hours late from SVO due to inclement weather. We had just about a 16 inches of snow in ODS, no idea how bad Moscow was. Once the flight arrived at ODS it was once again delayed due to a death on the aircraft from SVO to ODS. We finally arrived at IST 14 hours after our scheduled flight was to arrive. We stayed in IST for 3 days (at airlines expense) before we could catch the next flight to ATL.
A lot of flights were canceled or delayed during the past couple of weeks due to COVID-related staffing shortages. Today’s strip is unintentionally timely.
This is my family, as parents/sisters and I were about to board the plane back to Saudi Arabia. In those days, we wouldn’t see them again for two years.

And cry all over again at 9:15.

Is there any reason they can’t stay longer? They don’t have any jobs or pets.

This is an old one. It’s been a long time since you’ve been able to wait with people who are flying somewhere.

Were…were they meant to spend an hour crying?

One big flaw here… If you don’t have a boarding pass, you don’t get through security. Before 9/11 you could do that, but not anymore.

The good old days where you were able to walk anywhere as a FREE American!

Another example of how there’s no point to changing the years in the word bubbles when there are so many artifacts of a bygone age to date the strip.

Must be Southwest Airlines. It seems like a miracle if they leave on time.

At least the flight wasn’t cancelled like the 2000 daily happening now.

9:15 of which day in the week?
Experience in London,England in 2011.
Security confiscated all the canned and jarred foods I’d carefully bought at one of the major department stores, calling them “potential weapons”.
When I cleared security,I saw a duty-free shop where you could buy the same things!!
