I actually did “talk down” one of my cats who raced up a redwood tree without realizing ground cover kept him from having a good view of the ground on the hillside. I found a fifteen-foot long sapling that had been cut down (a former logging area) and braced it against the tree. I called him around and down to the lowest limb where he could see the sapling and run down it to the ground. Cats are not really designed for backing down a tree. However, the other cat who walked with us, Johnny Depp, never got stuck. He could back down a tree using his claws like jackboots – very sharp cat.

Please, blacken my visage with soot and dust!
That would have been more direct, Monty. Did you never notice that a wriggling tail tends to ream out a chimney?
