Was this strip from December 23, 2011 or was the 12-23 added on for this GoComics edition? If it was originally on a different date in December that would explain the school holiday reference as many schools went on holiday by last Friday (the 17th) at the latest. Here in Tampa all the school offices are closed from the 20th until January 3rd next year….
I thought about buying an artificial tree and went to several places to look at them. I was disabused of the idea quite quickly. The cheapest one I saw in the size we wanted (about 6 feet) ran more than $500! Some were over $1,000. We bought a newly cut fir of the same size for $25 (not kidding!). Usually, the cost is twice that, but even so, that would be 10 years of real trees. And I generally prefer real.
Good thing dad tethered the tree to the fireplace. Now it can’t sneak into her room at night and nibble on her toes, what with it being a coniferous tree and all.
I just noticed, Peter(Sr.) has attached guy wires to keep the tree from falling over! Loosen up your wallet and GET A LARGER STAND! Your son might decapitate himself!
Even a day early, for the traditionalists who put up their trees on Christmas Eve!
And as for Alice’s silly complaint: You’re only four years old, and I doubt you can remember back more than one year. Petey, My Hero, has the right attitude.
But I am a little worried about that support wire running from tree to wall (behind Peter). It could become the source of a horrendous tree-accident!

Who goes to school on 23 December anyway? Isn’t the winter vacation supposed to begin the week before Christmas?

How many years do you remember back exactly to establish a pattern, Alice?

Real trees need to sit in the house a day or so anyway, before you decorate. In order to let them breath. That’s what ole Pappy Durak used to say.
