Too many English majors earned PHDs and are doing their best to lock the English language into a perfect 1890s structure. They have developed such a fine and arcane structure and rules set that students might as well be studying the Talmud. The rest are university department heads of subjects they have never studied and have made all education “Read a book. Write a paper.”
Moods? I don’t remember that from grade school English. Maybe my education was awful too? I’ll have to go find Sister Joseph Teresa and ask her about it. I still remember the whole list of prepositions she drilled us on.
