My parents had a rule for presents – “If you ask for it, you will not get it.”
So, if you ask for it you won’t get it, but if you don’t ask for it – they don’t know what you want. And if somehow I got something that I wanted – it did not work, it broke or it was nothing like it was advertised to be.
Hence I have had a “NO GIFTS” rule since I figured this out. Drove my husband crazy for years (decades?) as all media says that when a woman says this – you better get her something wonderful. He finally understood not to get me anything for any occasion. We get along so well, he buys what he wants for gifts and I don’t get anything – works for us and saves money too.
