We always sleep like in the last panel. We once switched places, because my husband had broken his right collarbone. Less chance of me bumping into that shoulder during the night. We were glad to switch back to our former side after that.
Switching sides of the bed is not too much of a big deal for us. It usually is something that happens after a move, an done to conform to the arrangement of the new room. Easier path to the bathroom and or the kitchen are the main considerations. It is something considered after a move, because that is the only time the waterbed is taken down and put back up.
We finally gave up on waterbeds in the 90s. Right now, I’m sleeping on the wrong side of the bed because I just had a shoulder replacement, and things are easier to reach this way. Also, the dog stairs up to the bed (it’s one of those tall ones) can be on my side. They don’t like getting up on Hubs’ side.
I am a side sleeper, so we switch sides when the shoulder on that side starts too hurt. And no I don’t know why, but I always face my wife. Maybe because I LOVE her. ?? :-)
Married 43 years and went together for 6 years before that. I always sleep on my side of the bed and he always on his side of the bed – even when we would stay in hotels on trips. Realized that when he lived at home the wall next to the bed was where the center of the bed is now – and same for me, so we are each actually sleeping facing the way (away from the “walls”) as we did when we each lived at home.
Now switching would be major problem as my stuff is on my side of the bed – dresser, etc and his is on his side – chest, bookcase of James Bond books and of course our nightstands. Even if we could manage to move them they would not fit against the walls on the opposite sides of the room the same way and would be a problem.
One exception – We own a Class B RV (a Chevy Van fitted up commercially as rather small RV). The bed is the back 1/3 of the RV. I sleep on what should be his side of the bed and vice versa. I could not figure out why not only did this work, but why we needed to switch sides. Then I realized – since the RV bed goes from wall to wall and we get into the bed at the center (of the foot of the bed) and we also have actual walls touching the bed on each side – we had to reverse sides to feel as if everything around us is on the proper side and in its proper place.
