    I stock groceries overnight

If the product starts talking to me, I figure it’s time for my coffee break

The foods we have been eating for the last 10,000 years or so are all genetically modified. Humans bred in the savoury characteristics of plants and animals they wanted to eat. Corn, wheat, barley, rye all started out as small blades of various grasses and have been modified to this day. And don’t get me started on cruciferous vegetables. Animals? Just look at the turkey you had at Thanksgiving and the ham or goose or beef you had at Xmas. It’s just now there is more laboratory science being applied to agriculture. And don’t get me started on strawberries and grapes for sale at a Costco or Safeway or Aldi’s in the middle of winter.

Because some people are scared of Genetically Modified Foods (and only time will tell if those fears are justified), this year such foods have to be clearly labeled … as “bioengineered” – presumably because just about everyone knows what that means, right? You can call a phone number or use a QR code for someone to explain it to you.

People should be careful about the use of “genetically modified”. Humans have been modifying plants for thousands of years. Potatoes are an example. Wild tubers weren’t much good for anything, but potatoes are a staple for many people. I have read that the MesoAmericans spent 10,000 years working with corn so it could become a nutritious food source.

Fish genes added to strawberries for cold resistance ain’t “natural”.
