    Will there be another race,

To come along and take over for us?

    Maybe martians could do,

    Better than we’ve done

    We’ll make great pets!

    We’ll make great pets!

    We’ll make great pets!

    (song: Pets/artist: Porno For Pyros)

It is probably only a matter of time, but I will start to worry when computers give TED talks.

My hope is they will be benevolent and take care of us. My fear is they will be just like us.

An optimist believes this is the best of all possible worlds.

The pessimist fears that this is true.

On a recent “Jeopardy”, host Ken Jennings made a funny comment after a contestant gave a question/answer that I think was about IBM’s “Watson” AI… He said something like “You brought up a sore point, there…” ☺

Before we start worrying about AIs, consider this: We’ve developed electric jar openers, and parthenogenesis should be perfected in a decade or so. So there will be no reason for women to keep us men around except for entertainment purposes, basically as pets. By the same token, if a few decades after that the AIs take over, if we can figure out what qualities they would find appealing in companion animals, we can survive.

In recent news, a ten-year-old girl asked Alexa for a challenge; Alexa instructed her to partially plug in a phone charger and then touch a penny between the prongs.

    .

All this time we’ve been worried about the machines rising up and killing us. Turns out they’re trying to get us to do the job for them.

The diffferece between a pessimist and an optimist is that the optimist believes we live in the best of possible worlds, the pessimist fears this is true…

Anyone who thinks they would keep us around for “ecological” reasons hasn’t looked around the planet since about 1814………

It’s hard to see why AI would exploit people or wreck our habitat to make it better for themselves. AI effectively keep people around as pets in the Culture novels by Iain Banks.

Humans make decisions based on emotion with a little logic on the side. AIs make decisions based on pure logic. There’s no reason for them to get rid of us unless we were going to mess up the planet to a point it would make their existence difficult. So, yeah, maybe, but more likely they’d just take control and keep us around to provide maintenance.
