Definitely too short. The purpose of marker scratching is to define your territory and tell other cats how big you are . Nobody is going to mess with a cat whose scratch marks are four feet off the ground. Also, scratching is part of a full body stretch, important to cat healthy coordination. Don’t cheap out on a scratching post for kittens. The best is a floor-to-ceiling model with a ceiling brace . They can make flying leaps on and off of it and develop that superior point of view.
We discovered the secret. Cat treats. Our kitten looks at the scratching post as the lever on the cat treat dispenser. My wife rubbed it with a treat which helped a lot at the beginning.
My cats have not met a scratching post they don’t like. Hubby made one out of a 4″ × 4″ × 4′ fence post covered in carpet. It lays on the floor and they just go at it. Hubby died 27 years ago, and it is still popular.
We have a pillar over three feet tall that all the cats love. They stretch up and go at it. Achilles scaled it as a kitten. The diagonal scratcher is also popular, as are the cat trees.

Too short! A lot of scratching posts are designed for kittens. An adult cat can’t stretch out on such a post the way they want to.
