The last few years I went to racetracks (usually Portland Meadows in Oregon), I never placed a bet. I’d buy a program and pick a horse each raced based on their past performances, but betting would’ve ruined the fun of standing behind the rail and watching teams of horse-and-jockey thundering by toward the finish line. Parking and entry were free, the program was $2 and concessions were very reasonable…great way to spend a few afternoon hours for $10 to $15.

Were $2 bills common back then?

Take the bet, Jeff. You’ve already won.

Kind of expected that punchline. And yes there used to be a two dollar bill.
