    Now that I think about it, I have never actually seen (and certainly never ade) a snowman where coal was used for eyes or buttons. All sorts of rocks and acorns, but never coal.

    Coal used to be in most basements to heat the house. I remember when we switched to burning sawdust back in the 50’s. Sacks of sawdust passed down through the coal-chute and stacked in the black corner.

    We never had coal when I was a kid. It was wood, gas, or electric. When we built snowmen, we used rocks, bottle caps, or (in one terrifying instance) ping-pong balls with dots drawn on them.
