As valid as this message is, it’s a little bit ironic coming from a comic that relies so much on copied-and-pasted art in front of repetitive, undistinguished backgrounds. You really think Stantis would be producing work on the level of Hal Foster or Alex Raymond if he was given space to work in? “It’s not MY fault, it’s those darned bean-counters forcing me to be lazy!”
When they took surveys, every survey showed that the comics were the most read section of the newspaper. So publishers responded by giving the comics less and less space. I never understood that.
Editors don’t make business decisions. They get canned along with the writers as local papers go extinct. The oligarchs are very happy without the pests that make them explain their corruption.
“And then we went online, and guess what? The internet, where pages can be as big as you want, shrinks them even smaller, and makes no larger image available! Why? Go ask Alice.”
Anyway, free square today. Full sympathy to cartoonists whose space is being squeezed for no honorable reason.
I’d say that maybe if they had more space, they’d so something with it. On the other hand, Prince Valiant doesn’t get an acre of newsprint, but they haven’t compromised a single shading line on the art since Tom Yeates has had the pens in his hands.
Remember Walt Kelly’s POGO strip? After the Reuben-award winning cartoonist passed, his assistants tried to keep the strip going, but were unable to keep up the rich illustrative style because the space allowed was shrinking. “Our minority had got your majority out-surrounded….”

This is one of the reasons why so many peeps switched to online comics. The newspapers just don’t get it.

Newspapers have proven that they either don’t understand how to keep readers or they don’t really care to keep those readers.

“HECK, NEWSPAPERS USED TO WRAP THE SUNDAY EDITIONS IN THE COMICS.”
(wonders about the “HECK” mentioned in this piece of dialogue in this cartoon)
