I needed that reminder a couple of days ago. My wife just asked me where we were going for our anniversary tomorrow. Hadn’t even crossed my mind. Now I’ve got to work on a couple of things in the morning to see if I can pull this off.
We went out to dinner yesterday. One year we decided to go out on the spur of the moment, couldn’t find a place where there wasn’t an hour wait- or longer. Even Miky D’s was crowded! I think we ended up at Chuckie Cheese! Now, we avoid al of the “High Holy Days” and go out the week or day before.
Although we were both single, cultural taboos didn’t allow for us to be together, let alone marry. We both worked in public settings and I all these years later I have memories of the love I saw in his eyes, the poetry he inspired from my heart, and the single green tinged white carnation he sent (via friends) when I was in the hospital.
But the floral, candy, lingerie, and card companies wanted a specific day to enhance the bottom line. Celebrate every day with your significant other, folk.
Hubby and I don’t do Valentine’s day, aside from me putting out a few decorations. Being romantic and generous to each other does not wait for a day on the calendar.
he could have replied " it doesn’t have to be a special day like Valentine’s Day to take you somewhere nice for dinner because time spent with you means the most to me EVERY DAY"
I am not a fan of the formulaic Valentine’s Day holiday. Especially after having to do valentines cards for the whole class for years while our kids were in elementary school. My husband of 28 years is the more romantic of the two of us and would probably have done a big Valentine’s day outing each year if I wasn’t so grouchy about the holiday. IF we think of it, our Valentine’s day generally consists of picking up flowers or candy on sale the next day. Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, birthdays, and Christmas are the ones I value.
We got married on Valentine’s Day 30+ years ago but we didn’t take into account how busy restaurants always would be. (Poor planning on our parts.) We’ve always celebrated both events on any days we like, as we don’t need ‘special’ days to celebrate!

No, no, Arlo. The phrase should be: “Every day is Valentine’s Day to me”.

I just emailed the link to this comic to my husband—there’s A&J being us again! We’re so old that every day together is a treasure.

I agree. St. Valentine’s day should be everyday in a relationship…..

Valentines day is for single people. I would never expect my spouse of many years to observe such a contrived celebration.
