I graduated a long time ago, and I know there have been major changes to education in the US since (No Child Left Behind, for example). But what stopped me putting my hand up wasn’t the teachers, it was the students. I started to avoid answering questions due to peer pressure and bullying from being smart enough to know the answer and/or having studied. If called on, I could answer, but I stopped volunteering. Up through about fourth or fifth grade, it was fine. By the time I hit 7th-high school graduation, I learned the less attention I attracted from other students, the better off and smoother my day would go.
