And hopefully bury it…or in this case, the collection Opal calls art.

Pure Wisdom, Grampa I don’t believe Grumpma ever “had a horse”. There never WAS any artistic talent, to speak of - just the DESIRE to draw purty pitchers to sell for sewing kit money.

Telling her that it’s time to move on to a kind of hobby at which she may excel is just Gramp’s way of “steering” (a li’l cowboy humor - I know, VERY little) her LOVINGLY in a different direction - in other words, stop banging your head against the wall, and go get some plaster to repair the damage (the WALL, notcher head - too late to help THERE).

Opal doesn’t have to give up painting as her hobby. Just for her enjoyable, she can keep doing the painting. My mum loved painting pretty well. She won one of her paintings for first, second or third ribbon award. I couldn’t recall which one she won. Some of her paintings sold. I still have her paintings. She loved doing on that as her recreational hobby.

It depends on whether Opal is painting for fun, or whether she was trying to make a little extra money. If she was doing it for the money, she needs to find another way. If she was doing it for the fun, let her continue! My mother painted some really nice paintings. She also did some china painting, which were nice, but I liked the paintings on canvas better. I’ve got one she did for me, and I’m afraid there will be a family fight for one that is hanging in her house. (Her health has declined to the point of needing hospice care - no chance of her painting any more.)

Poor Opal. Don’t give up, if it makes you happy. If you are looking for success, maybe you might try another hobby.

I’ve seen some pretty BAD artists get their stuff shown, and some great artists get rejected on a regular basis. Maybe she should take an old refrigerator door, cover it in her grandchildren’s art and silly magnets, and try to sell THAT as art… I think the artsy, fartsy types will think it’s simply fabulous.
