And then my poor meatball rolled out of the door. It rolled in the garden and under a bush. And then my poor meatball was nothing but mush. That’s the way I learned it.
I must have led a childhood devoid of culture since I only heard the first two panels. Of course, I don’t remember Mom making meatballs ever, so I must have heard it from a schoolmate. ;-)
I heard a parody of this – sung as on top of a PIZZA all covered with cheese. Dick Biondi a DJ on WLS in Chicago used to sing it often. Back then rock radio was all am and we could pickup WLS from across the lake in SW Michigan at night. Lots of talking and short records [about 2 minutes each].
Tom Glazer & the Do Re Mi Children’s Chorus 1963 See, the song is only 59 years old. Since I was 15 then, the song has to be older than that because I can remember it from camp when I was younger.

♫ … So if you eat spaghetti … all covered with cheese,

Can Rover’s head, nose and mouth get any closer to the spaghetti? So adorable!

The song is a parody of “On Top Of Old Smokey”. I remember another parody of that song being used in the 1970s to advertise Smokey Bacon Crisps.

A sneeze blew my food to the soil.
It got mushy but still didn’t spoil.
Then a meatball tree sprouted
(And science was flouted).
The thought makes some folks want to hoil.
