Is there still “Postage Due” for letters? I know that there used to be stamps for it. But these days I don’t think the Post Office cares if you don’t pay that little extra.
She also, like Alice, seems to be happy in her own little world….. They each should let the one living her own little imaginary life be happy in it, until life actually gives them a reason to live happily in reality!
This is where Agnes should step up and send her a fake card from her dad for her birthday, maybe with grandma’s help so Trout doesn’t recognize the handwriting. It would be the “Christian” thing to do, as Agnes’ grandmother would say.

Her dad is better than her mother’s “Boyfriend of the week”.

Now I’m going to stay awake wondering if Trout’s real name is Ann.

I’m surprised she knows who her father is.

Trout should realize that the road to Hell is paved with “good intentions”!!

I hate to say it, but I don’t think think this is anything from her dad…
It’s an advertising flyer that came in an envelope, addressed to someone named “Ann.”
They don’t get much mail that comes in envelopes, except for bills, so she’s somehow convinced herself it’s a birthday card from her father.
He disappeared before she was born, or slightly thereafter…
I could be wrong, in fact, I wish I were…
but I doubt there’s been any contact between him and her mother, or that he remembers or cares that he has a daughter.
She’s never met him, but holds having a caring father, somewhere out there, as a dream in her heart.
Every now and then, the dream finds something to cling to, no matter how far fetched.
That’s what dreams do.

Sorta always thought Trout was the grown up of this dynamic duo, but it’s understandable that this aspect of her life is her la la land.
